Getting to know me!

Me and Jørgen

Hi there! Thanks for stopping by my blog! My name is Maren, I’m the owner of the TpT-store Malimo Mode.

I was born and raised in the middle of Norway, but moved to the western part as an adult. I lived in Bergen, Norway’s 2nd largest city, for almost 8 years. In Bergen I fell in love with the typical western Norwegian nature – mountains and fjords! Bergen isn’t a very large city in a global scale, there are only about 265.000 people in the metropolitan area.

After working in insurance and IT for several years, I decided it was time to find my true path in life. In business, I had worked with adult education and I felt that was something I was good at. Teaching, explaining and encouraging.

I attended Høgskolen i Bergen (Bergen University College) and their study programme Teacher Education and Training 1-7. My bachelor’s degree was on the topic assessment for learning (as opposed to assessment of learning). I am currently an undergrad working on my master’s degree. This degree is focused on how continuously testing students will influence them. I strongly believe that excessive testing is detrimental to learning, and more importantly to their self-esteem and motivation.

Downtown Bergen, with the famous Bryggen area.
Jørgen and I, out fishing

I live with the man of my dreams, and he was the one that lured me away from Bergen. We own a white house by the fjord, and you can actually see the famous Sognefjord from our living room windows. We look forward to starting a family here, in this peaceful place – a tiny village with barely 1400 people in the entire district. He works as a fish farmer, and runs a site not too far from where we live.

I work full time at the local school in addition to doing my master’s, and I’m loving it! I mainly teach Norwegian, English, math and social science, but I also cover other subjects. I teach a variety of grades, last school year I had 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th and 9th grade.

We are expecting our first child, due in March 2016. This means I’ll be off work on maternity leave until early February 2017. Very, very excited about this life changing experience!

I have a lot of interests outside school and teaching, for instance scrapbooking – and especially Project Life. I also have a passion for yarn, I knit and crochet all the time. We’re always watching movies and series, I have a long list of favorites. Another passion is hiking. We have an abundance of mountains and glorious views. I’ll be sharing them with you in my blog!

One of my regular hikes by the Sognefjord.

I’m hoping to connect with teachers from all over the world, so please leave a trace! 🙂
All the best,

Thank you so much! I came in as a sub first, and looking out that classroom window I was certain I couldn't find a school with a better view 😀

    Hi,

Have you ever seen or met Magnus Carlsen in person? He was born in Norway. For those of you aren't into chess, he's the best chess player on earth, maybe in the universe. Some say greater than Bobby Fischer. Anyway, that's my connection to Norway and you Maren. I am a 3/4 grade teacher in Millbrae, California near San Francisco. I like your blog! If you have anything to share on the broad subject of nonfiction, please visit my blog at eddiegrassi.blogspot.com
